Lost or stolen phone in China? The first hour matters.
A lost phone in China is two problems, and the money one is more urgent than the phone one. If Alipay or WeChat Pay was on that device and unlocked, the app can be opened by whoever has it. Freezing the accounts takes one call each and can be done before you’ve finished looking. Everything else — the police report, the lost-property shelves, the CCTV question — comes after.

What I can do on the phone
- Freezing or blocking the payment and banking apps that were on the device
- Blocking a Chinese SIM you bought on arrival, or asking a carrier what’s possible with a foreign one
- Reporting a theft at the police station that covers where it happened, and what the report needs to say for insurance
- Asking a hotel, taxi company, restaurant or attraction whether the phone was handed in
- Asking how long CCTV is kept at the place it went missing, before it’s overwritten
- Following up on a report or a lost-property enquiry that’s already filed
What this doesn't cover
- I can’t track your device. Find My / Find My Device is yours — I can’t log in on your behalf and I won’t ask for your account details.
- I can’t get a foreign SIM replaced in China. Most overseas carriers can’t issue a replacement SIM here; that usually has to wait until you’re home or in a country where they operate. A local Chinese SIM can be dealt with by the carrier here.
- I don’t replace your phone, pay for a replacement, or cover insurance excess.
- I can’t promise the report is enough for your insurer — that depends on what your insurer asks for, and I’ll help you find that out before you queue.
How it works
- Message me on WeChat — from another device — with what was lost, where, when, and what was on the phone.
- I call the offices in the right order: the platform or carrier to block, the station to report, the place it went missing to ask about lost property and footage.
- You get it in English: what’s been logged, what reference number you now hold, and what to do next.
Questions people ask before paying
If it was taken, yes — the report is what insurers and, often, your phone insurer or employer will ask for, and it has to be filed at the station covering where it happened. Do the account-freezing calls first, though.
Yes, that’s one of the most useful calls: hotels, taxi companies, stations and attractions all keep found items and can check. The answer is often “nothing logged”, and knowing that is worth something too.
That’s usually the hardest part, and I’ll be straight with you: most foreign carriers can’t do anything for you while you’re in China. I can call your hotel or a carrier shop to ask what’s actually possible, but I won’t promise a fix that doesn’t exist.
