Lost your passport in China? Here’s the order to do things in.

Short answer: Three offices, in this order: (1) the local police station, to report the loss and get a loss report; (2) your country’s embassy or consulate, to get a replacement passport or an emergency travel document; (3) the exit-entry administration (出入境管理局) of the local public security bureau, to sort your visa or exit permit. The embassy and the exit-entry office will both ask for the police report, which is why it comes first. The part people get wrong is the sequence. Most foreign tourists go straight to their embassy, get told they need a police report first, and lose a day. The second thing people get wrong is assuming a new passport is enough to leave China — it usually isn’t. Your visa and entry record have to match the new document before exit immigration will let you through.

I can’t promise a timeline. How fast a new passport is issued is entirely your government’s call; how fast the visa is fixed is the local exit-entry office’s call. What I can do is get you the real answer instead of the website answer.

Questions people ask before paying

Do I need a police report before the embassy?

In almost every case yes. A loss report from the local police station is normally the document your embassy asks for before issuing a replacement or an emergency travel document.

Can’t I just fly home on my existing visa?

No. Without a valid passport you can’t clear exit immigration. You need the replacement passport, and in most cases the exit-entry office also has to reissue your visa or stay permit onto the new document.

How long does it take?

That depends entirely on your embassy and the local exit-entry office. I can call both and give you their current stated timelines — but I won’t pretend a number I haven’t heard from them.

What if the visa page is gone along with the passport?

The passport is your embassy’s problem; the visa is the exit-entry administration’s. Both calls are on the list, which is why the order matters.
