China On-Call

Airline lost your luggage in China? Here’s who to call.

Short answer: File the PIR (Property Irregularity Report) at the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the baggage hall — everything afterwards depends on that piece of paper. Then the airline’s China office handles tracing and delivery, and the single most useful thing China On-Call does is give them a delivery address and phone number in Chinese that they can actually use.

The airport doesn’t own your bag — the airline does. So the airport lost-and-found is usually the wrong counter, and the airline’s baggage desk is the right one. The other thing that quietly fails for foreign travellers is delivery: a delayed bag goes to whatever address the system holds, and an address written in English with no Chinese phone number is where tracing stalls.

What I can do on the phone

What this doesn't cover

How it works

  1. Send me the airline, flight number, date, PIR or bag-tag number, and where you’re staying next.
  2. I call the airline’s baggage office in Chinese, quote your reference, and ask where the bag actually is and when it moves next.
  3. You get the status in English, plus the delivery address and phone number in Chinese that I’ve given them so nothing stalls at the courier stage.

Questions people ask before paying

What is a PIR and why does it matter?

Property Irregularity Report — the form the airline’s baggage desk gives you at the airport when a bag doesn’t arrive. It creates the reference number that every later call, claim and courier handover is built on. Without it, most airlines treat your bag as never reported.

I already left the airport. Can I still file one?

Sometimes, by going back to the airline’s airport desk or calling their baggage office — but it’s harder and may be refused, especially after a day or two. I can make that call and find out what your airline’s policy actually is instead of guessing.

Can you give the airline a delivery address in Chinese?

Yes, and this is often the whole problem. A delayed bag gets delivered to whatever the system holds; an address in English with no usable Chinese phone number is where most deliveries die. I’ll write the address and phone number in Chinese and confirm it with them on the call.

What about a bag left on a train?

Different system entirely — that goes through the arrival station’s lost-property counter and 12306’s lost-item route. I can make both calls.
