Left your bag or phone in a taxi in China?

Short answer: Two different routes depending on how you got the taxi. DiDi: use the app’s lost-item feature on that trip — it reaches the driver directly and is by far the fastest. Street taxi: you need the paper receipt (发票) with the car number, or the taxi company’s dispatch line; without one of those, tracing the car is very hard. A police report comes after, and mainly matters for insurance. China On-Call makes those calls in Mandarin and tells you in English what came back.

The driver has your item and no way to find you. Everything depends on whether you have a thread back to that specific car — a DiDi trip record, or a receipt with the car number printed on it — and on how fast you pull it. Shift ends, cars get cleaned, and taxi company lost-and-found boxes fill up with things nobody ever claims.

What I can do on the phone

What this doesn't cover

How it works

  1. Send me the time, the pickup and drop-off, the payment method, and a photo of the receipt if you have one.
  2. I call the taxi company or the relevant lost-and-found, quote the car number or the trip details, and ask whether anything was handed in.
  3. You get the answer in English — including who has it, where to collect, what to bring, or a straight “nothing logged”.

Questions people ask before paying

Can you call the driver for me?

If you have the car number from a receipt, or a DiDi trip record, yes — I can call the taxi company and ask them to contact that driver. I can’t call a driver directly with no way to identify the car.

What if I have no receipt and didn’t use an app?

Then the honest answer is that recovery is unlikely, and I’ll tell you so before you pay. The one thing worth trying is the taxi rank or hotel you left from — some keep records of which companies they use.

Do I need a police report?

For an insurance claim, usually yes — and a loss report normally has to be filed at the station covering the place where it happened. For actually getting the item back, the calls to the taxi company matter more.

How long do taxi companies keep found items?

It varies by company and by item, so I’ll ask rather than guess. The general rule in China is that the sooner the call is made, the better the odds.
